Uniao beat local rivals Maritimo 2-1 in their Primeira Liga opener and Funchal derby at the Centro Desportivo da Madeira.

Uniao have secured a 2-1 win against local rivals Maritimo in their Primeira Liga opener at the Centro Desportivo da Madeira in Funchal.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 28th minute through Breitner, before Elio Martins doubled his side's lead three minutes after the restart.

Although Dyego Sousa pulled a goal back six minutes from time, the visitors could not push on and find an equaliser as Uniao claimed all three points in the Madeira derby.

Uniao climb to third in the Primeira Liga table after their first game, while Maritimo slip to 16th place.
