Swansea City defender Angel Rangel says that he and his teammates had previously taken their Premier League status for granted before a return to form in 2016.

Swansea City defender Angel Rangel has said that he and his teammates acknowledged during a team meeting that they had sometimes taken life in the Premier League for granted.

The Welsh outfit took eight points from their opening four games before a run of six points from 11 fixtures cost Garry Monk his job at the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea have since improved under Francesco Guidolin and secured their place in the top flight for another 12 months, but Rangel has said that the team failed to apply themselves in the right manner at different stages of the season.

The 33-year-old is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "We said we have to show character and resilience to get points.

"The main message was that we have taken the Premier League status for granted at some points and it was important to get [safety] first and see how far we could go.

"When you have three managers in a season, you know it's not going to be easy."

Swansea made it five wins from 10 games when they defeated Liverpool by a 3-1 scoreline on Sunday afternoon.
