Bafetimbi Gomis goal sends Swansea City through

An early goal from Bafetimbi Gomis is enough for Swansea City to progress to the third round of the Capital One Cup, beating Rotherham United.

A first-half goal from Bafetimbi Gomis was enough for Swansea City to seal a 1-0 win over Rotherham United in the second round of the Capital One Cup this evening.

Swansea had the majority of the possession in the opening 10 minutes, but it was the Championship side that created the first chance when Michael Tidser volleyed just wide.

However, the home side continued to control the ball, and took the lead with just over 20 minutes played when Bafetimbi Gomis slotted the ball into the bottom corner on his first start for Garry Monk's side.

Lee Frecklington had a chance to get Rotherham back on level terms, but rushed his shot and sent it well high of the crossbar.

Dwight Tiendalli could have made it two for Swansea just before the break, but fired Gomis's through-ball into the side-netting.

Gerhard Tremmel had to make a save early in the second half when Jordan Bowery rounded Tiendalli to unleash a shot from the edge of the box, but it was comfortably held by the Swansea keeper.

The home side brought Jonjo Shelvey on after the break, and the midfielder came close to adding a second for the Welsh team when he fired in a low effort from 25 yards out, but it crept just wide.

Wilfried Bony came off the bench late on as Swansea looked to put the win beyond doubt, but he had one effort deflected behind for a corner, before firing over moments later.

Conor Newton almost found an equaliser for the visitors in the final moments of the tie, but sliced his ball well high from close range to see Swansea through to the third round.
