Preview: Wycombe Wanderers vs. Stoke City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Championship clash between Wycombe Wanderers and Stoke City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Stoke City make the trip to face Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park sitting two points outside of the Championship playoffs.

Meanwhile, the home side head into Wednesday's contest having recorded three successive draws, form which has kept the division's minnows in the bottom three.

Having conceded six goals during their previous two matches, few people would have been surprised to see Stoke record an uneventful goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday.

Both managers must take part of the blame for their sides delivering a lacklustre spectacle, but Michael O'Neill would have been satisfied with his team getting back on track in defence.

Young goalkeeper Josef Bursik was also able to keep a much-needed clean sheet as he comes under pressure from veteran Niki Maenpaa, although greater tests will follow against more attack-minded opposition.

Having dropped two points outside of the playoff places, the onus is on O'Neill to put together a strategy capable of gaining three points against one of the most improved sides in the division.

That will almost certainly see him stick with a back four, but the Chairboys will welcome those tactics as they bid to extend their recent unbeaten run.

Three draws in succession, the latest coming at relegation rivals Derby County, have kept Gareth Ainsworth's side within touching distance of getting out of the relegation zone.

Improvements are still required in the final third, but last season's League One playoff winners have conceded just four goals in their last half a dozen outings.

That is on par with current leaders Norwich City, and a better return in attack could lead to Wycombe making regular progress up the standings ahead of the Christmas period.

Team News

Ainsworth will almost certainly hand a recall to Adebayo Akinfenwa, resulting in Garath McCleary moving into a wide position.

Matt Bloomfield and Fred Onyedinma are also pushing to feature after they combined for Wycombe's equaliser at Pride Park.

Sam Vokes is expected to start for Stoke after replacing the injured Lee Gregory at Hillsborough.

Bursik should retain his spot between the sticks, while Jacob Brown is in line to replace James McClean on the flank.

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Allsopp; Grimmer, Stewart, Knight, Jacobson; Wheeler, Adeniran, Bloomfield; McCleary, Akinfenwa, Horgan

Stoke City possible starting lineup:
Bursik; Collins, Chester, Batth, Fox; Mikel, Clucas; Campbell, Powell, Brown; Vokes

We say: Wycombe Wanderers 1-2 Stoke City

Stoke will not be feeling particularly confident heading into this fixture, and that will only play into the favour of a spirited Wycombe side. However, Stoke's extra quality in the final third could prove decisive, and we are backing the visitors to edge a hard-fought contest.
