Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has written off Tottenham Hotspur's hopes of winning the Premier League title this season, claiming that "their squad is just not deep enough".

Tottenham have won each of their three Premier League matches at the start of the 2018-19 campaign, including a 3-0 victory away to Manchester United on Monday night.

The capital outfit did not spend a penny in the summer to improve their squad, however, and Merson has insisted that Mauricio Pochettino does not have a big enough squad to challenge for the Premier League crown.

"This is the time to put the pressure on and Spurs have put themselves in a great position by starting the season so well. They destroyed Manchester United," Merson wrote in his column for the Daily Star.

"Lucas Moura suddenly looks like a world-beater and I think he makes a real difference to Spurs this season. They are not the quickest team in the world, but he gives them another dimension by running at defenders with pace. It stretches teams and caused havoc at Old Trafford.

"It gives more room for players like Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen to play. But Spurs are more likely to win a domestic cup than the league. I don't see them going for the title come the end of the season.

"Their squad is just not deep enough. They've got about 13 decent players and after that it tails off. They made no signings in the summer but they did well just to keep their first team together. I really thought some of them might be off because they could get more money and a better chance of winning things by leaving."

Tottenham will look to build on their wins over Newcastle United, Fulham and Man United when they take on Watford on Sunday afternoon.
