How Tottenham Hotspur could line up against Stoke City

Sports Mole looks at how Tottenham Hotspur could line up for Wednesday night's EFL Cup quarter-final clash with Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium.

Tottenham Hotspur will continue their search for a first trophy since 2008 when they take on Championship side Stoke City in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.

Spurs arrive at the bet365 Stadium having failed to win any of their last three Premier League outings, taking just one point in that time to slip from first to fifth in the table.

However, they face a Stoke side sitting seventh in the Championship and with only four goals from their last seven games - although they have also kept six clean sheets in that time.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Jose Mourinho could set his side up for the contest.

Spurs are in the midst of a run of five games in the space of two weeks, so rotation is likely to be the order of the day for Mourinho in this match.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are among the players who could sit out, but there are plenty of big names waiting in the wings and this is a good chance for Spurs to flex their strength in depth.

Giovani Lo Celso will likely not be risked after he limped off early in the second half against Leicester City at the weekend, while Tanguy Ndombele may also sit out after being hooked at half time of that match.

Erik Lamela and Japhet Tanganga also remain out, but Spurs still have the likes of Gareth Bale, Dele Alli, Carlos Vinicius, Lucas Moura and Harry Winks knocking on the door for rare starts.

Other fringe players at the back will also be hopeful of their chance, with Joe Rodon, Davinson Sanchez and Joe Hart among those who could come into the starting XI.

Matt Doherty is expected to replace Serge Aurier, whose mindless foul in the penalty area gifted Leicester their opener at the weekend, while on the opposite flank Ben Davies could come back in for Sergio Reguilon.

While most of the usual starters are likely to be rested, Mourinho may keep Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in for what is sure to be a combative match in the middle of the park.
