Newport County's Joe Day 'proud' of team's performance at Tottenham Hotspur

Newport County goalkeeper Jason Day declares that he is proud of his team's performance during their 2-0 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur.

Newport County goalkeeper Joe Day has declared that he is "proud" of his team's performance during their FA Cup fourth-round replay against Tottenham Hotspur.

The League Two outfit went down 2-2 at Wembley Stadium after holding Spurs to a 1-1 draw in the original fixture, and Day insisted there was no shame in the result.

"It is a great effort from the lads. There is no shame in losing 2-0 to them. I am proud of the team and proud of the lads," he told BBC Sport.

"The gameplan was to stay in the game for as long as we could, but with a [first goal] like that, it is unfortunate. I have gone for the line of the ball and it has taken a deflection.

"We can take a lot of confidence. Over two legs against Tottenham we have held our own for the majority of the game."

An own goal from Dan Butler and Erik Lamela's first strike of the season fired Spurs into round five, where they will take on Rochdale.
