The visitors dominated possession in the opening stages, but the first chance on goal fell to the hosts in the 12th minute.

Robert Mak struck an effort towards the bottom corner at the first time of asking after being set up by Peter Pekarik, but Iker Casillas pulled off a good save.

Just two minutes later, Diego Costa came close to opening his account for La Roja with a header that flew just wide.

In the 18th minute, Slovakia unexpectedly took the lead, as a Juraj Kucka free kick that should have been saved by Casillas instead found its way into the net.

Slovakia goalkeeper Matus Kozacik was forced to save twice in quick succession at the end of the first half, denying Costa and then Sergio Busquets from close range.

Spain came quickly out of the starting blocks in the second period as both Cesc Fabregas and Costa troubled the in-form opposition stopper within the space of a few minutes.

Nevertheless, the hosts were able to repel their more illustrious opponents for most of the second half, constantly breaking Spanish attacks down in the final third.

This lasted until the 82nd minute when Jordi Alba fed a pass to substitute Paco Alcacer, who turned inside the box before finishing into the bottom corner to put Vicente del Bosque's charges level.

However, Slovakia had the final say when, with just three minutes left to play, Miroslav Stoch headed home from close range to send the home fans wild and inflict a first qualifying loss on Spain in eight years.
