The former RB Leipzig coach is the number-one candidate to replace Mark Hughes.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's appointment as Southampton's new manager appears close, according to reports in Austria.

Press Association Sport understands the 51-year-old is the number-one candidate to replace Mark Hughes, who parted company with the Premier League strugglers on Monday.

Austrian media outlet Kleine Zeitung reported on Tuesday that Hasenhuttl has signed a deal with the Saints and an announcement over his appointment is imminent.

The former RB Leipzig coach is available after ending his impressive spell with the German club in the summer. He previously coached at Unterhaching, Aalen and Ingolstadt.

Saints and Hughes went their separate ways on Monday, despite a credible 2-2 home draw with Manchester United on Saturday.

Former goalkeeper Kelvin Davies is set to lead them against Tottenham on Wednesday, searching for what would be just a second win of the Premier League season.
