AS Monaco reportedly earmark Rennes striker Adama Diakhaby as a possible replacement for in-demand winger Kylian Mbappe.

AS Monaco have reportedly identified Rennes striker Adama Diakhaby as a possible replacement for in-demand Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe is coveted by some of Europe's top clubs following a series of eye-catching performances last season, scoring 26 goals across all competitions to help Monaco to the Ligue 1 title and semi-finals of the Champions League.

Real Madrid are understood to be leading the race for the 18-year-old, although Manchester City and Arsenal are thought to still hold an interest in the £161m-rated teenager.

Monaco are currently in talks with Mbappe over a new contract in a bid to keep him at the club for at least one more year, but L'Equipe reports that they have earmarked Diakhaby as a back-up should Mbappe leave.

The 21-year-old Rennes striker has only played 25 games in Ligue 1, scoring four goals, but his form in that time was enough to reportedly pique the interest of Premier League side Newcastle United.

Monaco are thought to be in pole position to sign the youngster, though, in a deal which could be worth €10m (£8.9m).
