Real Madrid welcomed Sporting Gijon to the Bernabeu on Saturday afternoon knowing that a win would see them move seven points clear at the top of La Liga.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice inside the opening 18 minutes to send Real Madrid two goals ahead, but the deficit was halved in the 35th minute when Carlos Carmona turned home from inside the box.
Sporting had the chance to equalise from the penalty spot in the 78th minute, but Duje Cop fired into the stands as the impressive visitors suffered a narrow defeat in the Spanish capital.
