Reading announce that 22-year-old midfielder John Swift has signed a new five-year contract with the Championship outfit.

Reading have announced that John Swift has signed a new five-year contract with the Championship outfit.

Swift, who joined Reading from Chelsea last summer, was a part of the England Under-21 team that reached the semi-finals of the European Under-21 Championships in Poland earlier this summer.

The 22-year-old only signed a three-year deal with the Royals last summer, but an impressive 2016-17 campaign, which saw the midfielder score nine times in 41 appearances, has led to a fresh contract.

Manager Jaap Stam told Reading's official website: "Everybody knows the quality Swifty has. He showed us all last season what a great player he is and the difference he can make in games. And, as a club, you want to keep these influential players within your squad. So I'm very happy that he's signed this new deal at Reading."

Reading will open their 2017-18 Championship campaign with a trip to Queens Park Rangers on August 5.
