Arsenal legend Tony Adams claims that Mikel Arteta should bring back "the cherry on the cake" Mesut Ozil amid Arsenal's lack of creativity.

Former Arsenal defender Tony Adams believes that Mikel Arteta should seriously consider bringing Mesut Ozil back into the fold at the Emirates Stadium.

The 32-year-old looks to have played his final game for the Gunners after being left out of Arteta's Premier League and Champions League squads, with Ozil now in the final year of his contract at the Emirates Stadium.

However, Arsenal have often struggled for creativity this season and have not scored from open play in the Premier League since beating Sheffield United back in October, with Adams now urging Arteta to rethink his decision to oust Ozil from the squad.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Adams said: "Ozil for me is one of the best creative players in the world. What he struggles with at times is the defensive side.

"To win the league we need great players, like Dennis Bergkamp. Now and again I would ask Dennis to get back in behind the ball and just do a little bit for us. That's all Ozil needs to do.

"But when you're putting him on the sides and asking him to go with runners, he's not got that in him. But with [Thomas] Partey he's got someone who can [do that].

"I always said Ozil's the cherry on the cake without [Arsenal having] the cake but we're getting some players in the team [now] with stability there.

"There's signs you could get the cherry on and let him pull the strings for Aubameyang down the middle. I would love to see Ozil in behind feeding Aubameyang all day long."

Arsenal have failed to score in three of their last four Premier League matches without Ozil, with the only top-flight goal that the Gunners have notched up in that time coming from the penalty spot in their victory over Manchester United.
