Middlesbrough boss Garry Monk reportedly identifies Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle as a potential target during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle has reportedly emerged as a potential transfer target for Middlesbrough.

Last season, Gayle scored 23 goals from 32 league appearances as Newcastle won the Championship, but it appears that their North-East rivals are considering an offer to try to tempt him to remain at the second tier.

According to The Sun, Boro boss Garry Monk is considering whether to launch an offer in the region of £15m for the 26-year-old.

It has previously been claimed that Middlesbrough are keen to sign Britt Assombalonga from Nottingham Forest, but that deal remains in the balance with the forward also attracting interest from the Premier League.

Monk has hinted that he will take his time in the transfer market, but he wants an attacker to complement both Patrick Bamford and Rudy Gestede.

Newcastle are unlikely to want to entertain any bids from their rivals for one of their star players, while Gayle still has four years remaining on his contract at St James' Park.
