Newcastle United have completed the signing of Crystal Palace forward Dwight Gayle for a fee of £10m.

The Magpies suffered relegation to the Championship last season but Rafael Benitez has continued his rebuilding job at St James' Park by securing the signature of a player who scored 26 goals in all competitions during his three-year stay at Selhurst Park.

Benitez told the club's official website: "Dwight is a great player, a proven goalscorer, and it is fantastic news that he has joined us.

"He has a big personality, a lot of energy and pace. He is a good finisher also, so he will add goals to our squad, for sure. He knows English football well, too, and that is important in the Championship.

"I am sure Dwight will want to prove he can make a big difference to our team and I am looking forward to working with him."

Gayle's move to Newcastle was followed by Andros Townsend moving in the other direction, with the England international finalising a move back to the Premier League for £13m after penning a five-year contract.
