Rafael Benitez insists that Newcastle United can avoid relegation, despite their last-gasp defeat to Norwich City which saw the Magpies drop six off safety.

Rafael Benitez has insisted that Newcastle United can still beat the Premier League drop, despite this afternoon's last-gasp defeat to fellow strugglers Norwich City.

Newcastle twice fought back from behind through Aleksandar Mitrovic's brace and appeared on course for a point until the 93rd minute when Martin Olsson struck to send Norwich six points ahead of Newcastle.

"Today was a pity," Benitez told BBC Sport after the final whistle. "We conceded in the last minute of the first half and then we reacted well but we are disappointed. We worked hard but it is not enough to win games. We have seven games to go and we have to keep pushing.

"When we scored the second goal we were on top but we make a mistake and concede. It can happen when you don't have too much confidence but we have to change it for the next game.

"Now it is more difficult but we have to keep confident that we can still do it. What upsets you more is the way that we concede in the last minute of each half. If we start winning games we still have time."

Newcastle do have a game in hand on the Canaries, although that comes against Champions League quarter-finalists Manchester City.
