Middlesbrough have announced that Uruguay international Cristhian Stuani has left the club to join Spanish outfit Girona.

Former Boro boss Aitor Karanka signed the centre-forward from Espanyol in the summer of 2015, and he scored 11 times during the 2015-16 campaign to help the English club into the Premier League.

Stuani, who is a 35-time Uruguay international, only managed five goals in all competitions last season, however, and has been allowed to join Catalan outfit Girona for an 'undisclosed fee'.

"Cristhian Stuani has joined Spanish club Girona. The Uruguayan international completed a return to La Liga after flying out to the Catalan club on Friday to finalise the deal," read a statement on Middlesbrough's official website.

Girona will play La Liga football in the coming season for the first time in their history.
