A report claims that David de Gea will be left out of Spain's starting XI to face Russia in the last 16 of the World Cup after failing to impress during the group stage.

Stand-in Spain boss Fernando Hierro is reportedly planning to drop David de Gea for his side's World Cup last-16 tie against Russia.

The Manchester United goalkeeper made a high-profile error in La Roja's opening-match draw with Portugal, allowing Cristiano Ronaldo's shot to squirm through his grasp.

De Gea has looked short of confidence in the two games since, conceding two more in the 2-2 draw with Morocco that sealed top spot in Group B.

According to Metro, the 27-year-old is expected to be replaced by Athletic Bilbao keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in Hierro's starting lineup for the Russia match.

The same report also claims that Man United boss Jose Mourinho has sent a message of support to De Gea, who is said to be close to agreeing a five-year deal with the Red Devils.
