Fernando Hierro describes David de Gea as "very calm" and insists that he has no doubts over the quality of Spain's first-choice keeper.

Spain manager Fernando Hierro has vowed to stand by David de Gea following the goalkeeper's costly error against Portugal in his side's opening World Cup match.

The Manchester United stopper allowed a routine shot from Cristiano Ronaldo to squirm through his grasp, giving the European champions a 2-1 lead at half time.

La Roja turned the game on its head in the second period before being pegged back at 3-3 in a thrilling contest, with De Gea also well beaten for the third of Ronaldo's goals late on.

Despite the 27-year-old's shaky display at the Fisht Olympic Stadium, stand-in boss Hierro insists that he has no doubts over his number one.

"I see David as being very calm and he has all our confidence in full," he told reporters. "Players need confidence and support at all times and my decision is very clear, and I will be fair with every players.

"The squad has had a day off and that helped David relax and step away, because we are more interested with natural methods in our preparations, making sure we get our heads right."

Spain return to action on Wednesday evening with a meeting against Iran at the Kazan Arena, seeking their first Group B win at the second attempt.
