Michael Carrick has signed a one-year extension to his Manchester United contract, the club have confirmed.

The 34-year-old looked set to leave Old Trafford after 10 years this summer, with his old deal due to expire next month.

However, new manager Jose Mourinho has opted to hand the veteran midfielder a one-year extension, keeping him at the club until June 2017.

"This great club has been a part of my life for the past 10 years, so I am delighted that this incredible journey is continuing," Carrick told the club's official website.

"It's great to have the opportunity to work under Jose Mourinho, who has achieved so much during his managerial career.

"I would like to thank the fans for their unwavering support. Winning the FA Cup was a special moment and, hopefully, we can go on to win more trophies in the future."

Carrick has made 421 appearances for United since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006.
