How Manchester United could line up against Liverpool

Sports Mole looks at how leaders Manchester United could line up for Sunday's Premier League showdown with champions Liverpool at Anfield.

Manchester United travel to Anfield on Sunday as Premier League leaders, sitting three points clear of the champions and their hosts Liverpool.

A 1-0 victory over Burnley on Tuesday night saw the Red Devils move to the top of the table to place even more emphasis on what is always one of the red-letter days in the English football calendar.

United will arrive on Merseyside to take on a Liverpool side without a league win in their last three attempts too, although their hosts have not lost at home in the league in their last 67 such matches.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could set his side up for the contest.

Manchester United will conduct late fitness tests for three players ahead of this match, including forward Anthony Martial after he limped off late against Burnley earlier this week.

The Frenchman was initially expected to be a major doubt after picking up what looked like a hamstring problem, but the indications are now that he will recover in time to start on Sunday.

Should that be the case then he will likely be played through the middle, with Edinson Cavani making way and Paul Pogba moving further forward, although Mason Greenwood provides another attacking option for Solskjaer should he decide to go for maximum pace against a patched-up Liverpool defence which could be lacking in that area.

Bruno Fernandes will look to pull the strings having scooped another Premier League Player of the Month award for December, becoming the first player in English top-flight history to win four in a calendar year.

The Portuguese playmaker's record against 'big six' sides is less impressive, but Marcus Rashford does have a good recent history against Liverpool, scoring three times in his last four league editions of this fixture.

Victor Lindelof could be available again after a back injury, although even if he does recover in time he might find it difficult to break up the centre-back partnership between Harry Maguire and Eric Bailly which has begun to flourish in his absence.

Brandon Williams and Phil Jones have been confirmed as absentees by Solskjaer, who also hinted that new signing Amad Diallo could be included as part of the squad for the first time.
