England and Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney says that he is a more patient player now than he was during the early stages of his career.

England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has said that he has grown more patient as his career has progressed.

The 30-year-old's temperament was often questioned during the early stages of his career following a number of red cards for club and country.

However, Rooney insists that he has matured through the years and does not believe that there can be many comparisons drawn between the current version and his younger self.

"I think I'm a different player now to what I was then so I don't compare myself - I'm always just thinking about what comes next and making sure I'm at my best for the summer," he told the PFA's 4 The Player magazine.

"I feel I'm a lot more patient now in my play, when I was younger I could be impatient and I'd end up in positions I didn't really need to be in."

Rooney is England's record scorer with 51 goals for his country.
