Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has admitted that his team's 1-0 win over Everton was "a little bit scrappy".

Anthony Martial scored the only goal of the match early in the second period as the Red Devils continued their pursuit of the top four with a narrow victory over the Toffees at Old Trafford.

Smalling has claimed that his team's defensive work was a contributor to the victory, but conceded that their performance was a little bit untidy as they held off pressure in the latter stages.

"The first half we controlled it. In the second half, it did get a little bit scrappy, but we defended well and showed good character. The manager told us to be patient at half time," Smalling told Sky Sports News.

Man United have now won each of their last four Premier League games on home soil.

Juan Mata of Manchester United celebrates scoring his team's second goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion at Old Trafford on November 7, 2015 in Manchester, England.
