Emre Can encourages Borussia Dortmund teammate Jadon Sancho to be "a little smarter" after being fined for breaching regulations regarding haircuts in Germany.

Emre Can feels that Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho will require "a little guidance" during the next phase of his career.

While Sancho has enjoyed an outstanding campaign, the 20-year-old has recently been in the headlines for negative reasons after breaching government regulations regarding haircuts during the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite photos emerging of Sancho and a hairdresser not wearing face masks, the England international described the subsequent fine handed out by the German league as an "absolute joke".

Acknowledging that the situation could have been handled better, Can says that Sancho needs to "grow up" over the coming years if he is to continue on an upward trajectory.

Speaking to Sky Deutschland, Can said: "Jadon needs a little guidance. He's a great boy, also off the pitch. It's true that I get along very well with him.

"He just has to be a little bit smarter about these things. Everyone needs a hairdresser. He needs to grow up. He can't afford to make mistakes like that in the future.

"We as a team are also responsible. We are not annoyed by him. We know that he has to be more disciplined in some things. But he knows that too.

"I don't think he does this on purpose to create a scandal. Maybe he doesn't realise it, maybe he trusts too many people in some things. He needs people to guide him. That's where the environment is very important."

Sancho is currently being tipped to move to Manchester United during the next transfer window.
