Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic admits that it was important to return to winning ways in their FA Cup quarter-final with Brighton after exiting Europe.

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has talked up the importance of his side returning to winning ways against Brighton & Hove Albion following their Champions League exit earlier this week.

Jose Mourinho's side booked their place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup courtesy of a 2-0 triumph over the Seagulls this evening, with Matic creating one and scoring another at Old Trafford.

The competition is United's only remaining hope of silverware this season following Tuesday's defeat at home to Sevilla, and Matic now has his sights firmly set on lifting the trophy in May.

"It was difficult for us after the defeat against Sevilla, of course we were very sad after the game. It was important to see a reaction today and we're through to the next round and we're happy," he told BT Sport.

"1-0 is always dangerous because they are a good team and can punish us from every mistake. It was important to score the second and that's what we did.

"When you play for Manchester United, the supporters always expect you to win trophies and I hope we're ready to win the FA Cup which is an important trophy in England."

Matic's performance saw him score and assist in a game for the first time since August 2014.
