Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes says that the Red Devils 'lacked effort' during Tuesday's 1-0 defeat to Juventus.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has accused the Red Devils of 'lacking effort' during Tuesday's 1-0 defeat to Juventus in the Champions League.

Paulo Dybala scored the only goal of the match as Juventus collected all three points from their trip to Old Trafford.

Scholes has not been shy in criticising United this season, but the Englishman does not believe that his former club should sack Jose Mourinho, claiming that the Portuguese has "been a bit different" in recent weeks.

"He talks about effort and I didn't see that for the first hour. I don't think I saw it during the game. Juventus were a class above. The sad thing is there is a bit of acceptance from the fans and the players," Scholes told BT Sport.

"I don't see what they're trying to achieve - but I wouldn't change Mourinho. He's got a great record and won major trophies. The last couple of weeks he's been a bit different."

United have only won one of their last seven matches in all competitions and currently sit in 10th position in the Premier League table ahead of Sunday's clash with Everton.
