Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola suggests that Ilkay Gundogan is not certain to remain at the club past the end of his contract in 2020.

Manager Pep Guardiola has suggested that Manchester City are still trying to convince Ilkay Gundogan to sign a new contract.

Gundogan has endured an injury-hit spell at the Etihad Stadium, but the Germany international has still made 65 starts and 33 substitute outings in all competitions since the start of the 2016-17 campaign.

However, Guardiola has indicated that the 28-year-old is still yet to decide whether to continue his time with the North-West giants past 2020.

Guardiola is quoted by The Independent as saying: "I think Gundo, in the first season he couldn't play because of a tough injury, six or seven months out, but always when he was able to play a lot of games he is an incredibly important player.

"He knows what we want, he knows what we think about him but it's the same as other cases like we said in the past: at the end, the last decision is not in our hands.

"We try to speak with him, we want him to extend the contract right now. Yesterday would have been better than today, and today better than tomorrow, but if he doesn't want to, we cannot do anything else."

City may look to make as many as four new signings during the summer transfer window.
