Sunderland manager David Moyes has said that he is "disappointed" to have seen his side fall to a late defeat at the hands of Manchester City this evening.
The Black Cats opened their 2016-17 Premier League campaign with a tricky assignment away to the title favourites, but it took an 87th-minute own goal from Paddy McNair for the hosts to get Pep Guardiola's reign off to a winning start.
Moyes stressed that his side are still "not ready" for the new season, and reiterated the need for further signings having handed debuts to Lynden Gooch and Donald Love at the Etihad.
"We tried to stifle the game and for long periods we were successful in doing that. I'm just disappointed. It was disappointing that we backed off Jesus Navas and allowed the ball to be played across the six-yard box [for their winner]. From there it was always going to be difficult to avoid a goal or an own goal," he told BT Sport.
"I can't be critical of the players because they did a great job all-round really, but I am disappointed we didn't get a point. We are not ready yet. We're not going to be for a while, I've told the players that today. I want them to build on how they finished last season, but I want to do better than that. Which can't be done in two weeks.
"We are definitely looking short in several areas and will do everything we can to improve the team. But today we gave two young boys their debuts, at Man City. So if the young players do well enough we are happy to promote them too."
Jermain Defoe got Sunderland's goal in the 2-1 defeat, becoming just the eighth player to score in 16 separate Premier League seasons.
