Defender Vincent Kompany says that Manchester City should have been "more cautious" during the second half of the derby clash with Manchester United.

Defender Vincent Kompany has acknowledged that Manchester City should have done more to manage their derby showdown with Manchester United.

Kompany opened the scoring for City - who held a 2-0 lead at half time at the Etihad Stadium - but United fought back to record a famous 3-2 triumph over their neighbours.

The result prevented City from wrapping up the Premier League title against their rivals, and Kompany has suggested that his side should have approached the second half differently.

The 31-year-old told Sky Sports News: "You know probably the second half you can look at a team which has had seven days to prepare and we've had a three-day turnaround, so no complaints there, but maybe that's what went wrong for us in the second half.

"That's why we should have either buried the game in the first half or maybe realised we had to be a little bit more cautious in the second half. Whichever way, but fair play to them. No blame to anyone but the reality of this game is we should have buried it."

City still hold a 13-point lead in the top-flight standings.
