How Manchester City could line up against Schalke 04

Sports Mole looks at how Manchester City could line up for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Schalke 04.

Manchester City's Champions League campaign resumes on Wednesday evening when they take on Schalke 04 in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

The Citizens are still on course to win all four competitions that they are competing in thanks to a run of 12 wins in their last 13 matches since Boxing Day.

Pep Guardiola rotated his squad between games against Chelsea and Newport County in the Premier League and FA Cup respectively, making a total of seven changes, and he is expected to revert back to a similar XI to the one that thrashed the Blues for this trip to Germany.

Ahead of the midweek showdown at the Veltins-Arena, Sports Mole looks at how the visitors could line up.

Despite an impressive showing from Phil Foden on his seventh start of the season against Newport at the weekend, Guardiola will likely recall Kevin De Bruyne in his three-man midfield alongside Fernandinho and David Silva, though Ilkay Gundogan is another option.

The front three may remain the same from the 6-0 win against Chelsea, meanwhile, as Bernardo Silva performed brilliantly in that match and Raheem Sterling has showed no signs of fatigue, while Sergio Aguero boasts two hat-tricks in his last three games.

No player delivered more assists than Riyad Mahrez in the Champions League group stage, and Leroy Sane will be desperate for a place in the side against his former club, but the attacking duo may have to settle for a place on the bench.

Mendy remains a fitness doubt, meanwhile, as does club captain Kompany, so it is between Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabian Delph for a place at left-back.
