Lyon boss Genesio wants to build on victory over Manchester City

Lyon ran out 2-1 winners in the Champions League at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Lyon manager Bruno Genesio has urged his side to build on their surprise victory at Manchester City when they return to Ligue 1 action.

The French club stunned Pep Guardiola's side with a 2-1 victory in the opening round of Champions League fixtures at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

Maxwel Cornet and captain Nabil Fekir scored for the visitors in the first half before holding out for the three points despite Bernardo Silva's 67th-minute strike.

Lyon will now hope to use their victory against City as a springboard to improving their indifferent early-season domestic form which has seem them lose two of their opening five matches.

On Sunday evening they will host Marseille, who are behind only Paris St Germain in the division.

"The big matches are easier to prepare for in terms of motivation," Genesio told the club's official website. "It will take other ingredients to beat Marseille.

"The players realised what they are capable of with that kind of performance (against City), and you cannot afford to be below a certain level in other matches.

"In terms of the intensity and the commitments we must be able to maintain this level, and 80 or 90 per cent of the time we have to reproduce what we did.

"It is too early to say if we have matured, but at least it gave us confidence and we became aware of the elements required to put in a high-level performance."

Brazilian defender Fernando Marcal is back in training for Lyon after a calf injury prevented him from featuring against City, but the game against Marseille is likely to come too soon.

For Marseille, they will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing home defeat to 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League on Thursday.

Marseille have not won at Lyon since 2007, but manager Rudi Garcia, who will be without injured French defender Adil Rami, has called on his side to bounce back.

"We need to focus to go and get a result at Lyon, and it will in all likelihood be without Adil," Garcia told ligue1.com.

"We need to put the result in Europe behind us quickly and get back on track in the league, where we are in a good position."
