Doncaster reached the play-offs but Scunthorpe, Walsall and Plymouth suffered the drop.

Luton were crowned Sky Bet League One champions after easing past Oxford 3-1 at Kenilworth Road as the season drew to a close.

Doncaster reached the play-offs but Scunthorpe, Walsall and Plymouth suffered the drop.

Here, Press Association Sport takes a look at how all the action unfolded on the last day of the regular season.

Full-time: Luton claimed the champions' crown, Barnsley secured the runners-up spot and Doncaster sealed seventh place and a place in the League One play-offs.

At the bottom, Southend made their status in the English third tier safe but Scunthorpe, Walsall and Plymouth were all relegated to League Two.

19:29 – Southend's safety is confirmed as they pull off the great escape to hold on for a 2-1 victory over Sunderland.

19:28 – Plymouth and Scunthorpe are both relegated following Argyle's 3-2 win at Home Park.

19:25 – Doncaster seal their place in the play-offs thanks to a 2-0 win over Coventry.

19:24 – Luton celebrate being crowned champions following the full-time whistle at the end of their 3-1 victory at home to Oxford.

While Barnsley clinch the runner-up spot.

19:22 – There are six minutes of time added on at Southend as they await the final whistle to seal their League One safety.

19:21 – Walsall are relegated after a goalless draw at Shrewsbury.

19:20 – AFC Wimbledon secured their safety thanks to a goalless draw at Bradford.

19:17 – Ivan Toney completed his brace to extend Peterborough's lead to 3-1 after 88 minutes but it will not be enough to clinch a spot in the play-offs.

19:15 Southend took a narrow 2-1 lead at home to Sunderland with Stephen Humphrys on target three minutes from time to see his side safe.

19:10 – Alex Bradley pulled one back for Burton against Peterborough to trail 2-1.

19:09 – John Marquis headed home to double Doncaster's lead to strengthen their hold on seventh.

19:04: Chris Maguire levelled from the penalty spot for Sunderland against Southend to leave the Blues back in the final relegation spot.

19:03: Luton extended their lead to 3-1 thanks to George Moncur's second goal of the day as the Hatters had one eye on the champions' trophy.

19:01: Plymouth went ahead again through Graham Carey to lead Scunthorpe 3-2 and put the pressure on Southend.

19:00 Bristol Rovers equalised to leave Barnsley two points off leaders Luton.

18:52 – Scunthorpe equalised through Josh Morris on the hour mark of their relegation battle with Plymouth to remain second-bottom and three points from safety.

18:51 – Oxford pulled a goal back to trail 2-1 at Luton through Luke Garbutt but the hosts hold onto top spot.

18:40 – Luton doubled their lead to strengthen their hold on the champions' trophy with Elliot Lee netting eight minutes after the break.

Half-time – As things stand, Luton will be crowned champions with Barnsley runners-up, while Doncaster will claim the final play-off spot.

At the bottom of the table, Plymouth will be relegated on goal difference as they sit in 21st with 50 points – the same number as Southend and Wimbledon.

18:15 – Barnsley were reduced to 10 men just before the break as Liam Lindsay was sent off for his second bookable offence.

18:14 – Relegation-battlers Southend took the lead through John White in their clash at home to Sunderland to move to safety as Plymouth dropped back into 21st.

There are currently three teams – Southend, Wimbledon and Plymouth – on 50 points, but Argyle have the worst goal difference.

18:12 – Scunthorpe pulled a goal back against relegation-threatened Plymouth to trail 2-1 thanks to Kyle Wootton's 42nd-minute strike.

18:05 – Peterborough went 2-0 up with Ivan Toney getting on the scoresheet 11 minutes before the break.

18:04 – Freddie Ladapo doubled Plymouth's lead to strengthen their hold on the last place of safety.

18:02 – Doncaster moved back into the play-offs following a headed opener from Kieran Sadlier at home to Coventry.

17:49 – Peterborough moved into the play-offs after Joe Ward tapped in from close range midway through the first half at home to Burton, while Doncaster dropped to seventh a result.

17:43 – Kieffer Moore headed second-placed Barnsley in front with his 17th league goal of the season at Bristol Rovers to keep the pressure on Luton at the top.

17:37 – Plymouth moved out of the relegation zone – and dropped Southend into danger – thanks to Lloyd Jones' eighth-minute header against Scunthorpe.

17:35 – Leaders Luton claimed an early advantage in the race to be crowned champions as George Moncur's free-kick found the bottom corner.

17:29 – Luton and Barnsley are in a battle for the title after sealing promotion on Tuesday, with the Tykes at Bristol Rovers while Luton host Oxford.

Charlton are secure in the play-offs while Doncaster lie sixth. Should Rovers drop points against Coventry, Peterborough can take advantage by beating Burton.

Bradford are down but Scunthorpe, Walsall, Plymouth and Southend are separated by only a point – Argyle and the Iron meet in a key fixture. AFC Wimbledon are still not mathematically safe if three of those four teams win.
