Liverpool are reportedly not looking to spend big money on a new central defender this month, despite injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

Liverpool are reportedly not going to splash the cash on a new central defender in the January transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp has been hampered with defensive injuries this season which has seen Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez ruled out for most of the 2020-21 campaign, while Joel Matip has also suffered with several injuries.

However, football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano states that Liverpool will not spend big this month unless a "good opportunity" comes about in the weeks to come.

"I think that Jurgen Klopp has been so honest when he speaks about the market. Not all managers are honest about transfers, but Jurgen Klopp was honest," Romano told Sky Sports News.

"They are looking for opportunities. If something arrives, they will be ready to sign a new player but spending €60m-€70m (£53.9m-£62.9m) for players like [Dayot Upamecano] or this kind of centre-back is absolutely impossible in this window for Liverpool.

"If they will have a good opportunity, they will think about it in the next weeks. If not, I am sure Liverpool will stay with this squad."

Liverpool have failed to win any of their previous three Premier League matches, but still remain top of the table, level on points with Manchester United.
