How Tottenham Hotspur could line up against Liverpool

Sports Mole looks at how Tottenham Hotspur could line up for Wednesday's top-of-the-table Premier League tussle with Liverpool at Anfield.

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to deliver the strongest statement of their title credentials yet when they visit the home of champions Liverpool on Wednesday night.

Only goal difference separates the two sides in the table heading into this contest, with Spurs narrowly leading the way despite dropping points at the weekend.

Victory at Anfield would see them move out on their own at the top, but that is something no visiting team has managed to do in the league since April 2017.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how Jose Mourinho could set his side out for the contest.

Doubtful: Gareth Bale (illness)

Mourinho may well look to tweak his playing style for the visit to Anfield, as he so often does away to fellow 'big six' teams, but changes to the personnel may be limited.

Unlike their injury-ravaged opponents, Spurs boast almost a clean bill of health with Gareth Bale expected to recover from illness to be in contention, leaving Erik Lamela and Japhet Tanganga as their only confirmed absentees.

It could therefore be an unchanged XI which takes to the field this week, which would mean another start for Serge Aurier ahead of Matt Doherty at right-back.

Harry Kane will lead the line again after making it 19 goal contributions in just 12 Premier League games this season with his strike against Crystal Palace - he needs just one more goal to reach double figures for goals and assists this season, and is well on course to smash Cesc Fabregas's record of reaching that milestone in just 17 games.

Kane has scored four times in six Premier League games at Anfield before but has never ended up on the winning side - in Premier League history, only Nigel Clough and Dougie Freedman have scored more goals at one stadium without winning there.

It is Kane's partnership with Son Heung-min which has been every bit as impressive as his own goalscoring this season, and the swerving strike against Palace was already the 12th time they have combined to score in the Premier League in 2020-21.

Only once before has a duo ever combined for more goals throughout an entire Premier League campaign, with Kane and Son now just one behind Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton's 13-goal tally from Blackburn Rovers' title-winning 1994-95 season.
