England manager Roy Hodgson admits that there is a question mark over the fitness of striker Daniel Sturridge ahead of his final squad selection for Euro 2016.

England manager Roy Hodgson has admitted that there is a question mark over the fitness of Daniel Sturridge ahead of his squad selection for Euro 2016.

The Liverpool striker has suffered an injury-plagued season and has been unable to train over the last two days due to a calf strain.

That makes him a major doubt for Friday's warm-up match against Australia, with some reports even suggesting that it could rule him out of the tournament altogether, but Hodgson insists that he will give players as long as possible to prove their fitness before finalising his squad.

"Daniel has a calf strain, he's had that since he joined up with us. We'd been hoping it would get better, we will see tomorrow. He wasn't able to train yesterday or today," he told reporters.

"We're waiting on him, and I can't give you any more information than that. If he does report fit I want him to play, if not he won't. As far as the 23 is concerned it's simple, I will leave it as long as possible. A lot of things can happen in football.

"We have a match to play, matches sometimes give you injuries, we hope not, and also training sessions give you injury problems. There's no reason for me whatsoever to talk about who may or may not go. I have until midnight on Tuesday, until that time I'll keep my powder dry."

Hodgson also confirmed that Marcus Rashford is likely to be handed his international debut when they welcome Australia to the Stadium of Light on Friday.
