Player Ratings: Robert Lewandowski shackled as Bayern Munich crash out

Sports Mole rates the Bayern Munich players' performances following their 3-1 loss to Liverpool at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern Munich failed to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in eight seasons as they fell to a 3-1 loss against Liverpool in Wednesday night's last-16 second leg.

The German champions offered very little attacking threat on home soil, as was the case at Anfield three weeks ago, managing just two shots on target across the two legs.

Bayern's only goal of the tie came via a Liverpool player, in fact, as Joel Matip sent the ball into his own net, either side of a Sadio Mane brace and a powerful Virgil van Dijk header.

Here, Sports Mole rates the performances of Niko Kovac's side on a night to forget in Bavaria.

Goal

Manuel Neuer: On what was his 100th Champions League appearance, Neuer was left stranded by Mane for Liverpool's opening goal and got nowhere near the next two goals. The German's powers appear to be waning. (5/10)

Defence

Rafinha: Asked to fill in for Joshua Kimmich out on the right, which is no easy task. Came out second best in his individual battles and will likely now be back on the bench next weekend, given Alaba's return to fitness. (5/10)

Niklas Sule: Another who failed to get near Mane for both of the Senegalese forward's goals, though he did complete a joint-high four clearances. (6/10)

Mats Hummels: Paired with Sule this evening, and not Jerome Boateng, Hummels will be disappointed to have been caught out by a couple of aerial balls. (6/10)

David Alaba: Brought back into the side this evening after recovering from injury, the versatile full-back tested Alisson with a long-range free kick but did little else in an attacking sense. Appears to have stagnated somewhat. (6/10)

Midfield

Javi Martinez: Failed to control the match from his holding midfield position and was sacrificed in the second half for the more attack-minded Goretzka. (5/10)

Thiago Alcantara: Completed more passes than any other player on the field, 31 of those in the opposition half - also a high - but could have done more to increase the tempo of Bayern's play. (7/10)

Attack

Serge Gnabry: The liveliest of Bayern's players. The winger charged past Robertson to force Matip into the own goal and his two shots were more than any of his teammates managed across the 90 minutes. (7/10)

James Rodriguez: Came into the match on a good run of form but this display will provide plenty of ammo for his critics. What exactly did he offer the home side this evening? (5/10)

Franck Ribery: Earned his place in the side by virtue of claiming a hat-trick of assists from the bench against Wolfsburg at the weekend. Took half an hour before he got involved in the match and then a further 30 minutes before he got in behind, only to send his cutback straight to a Liverpool player. (6/10)

Robert Lewandowski: The Champions League's top scorer this season offered next to nothing over the 180 minutes, which is ultimately credit to Liverpool's defenders. Fired a blank in the first leg in terms of shots on target and only fared slightly better here, sending a powerful effort right down the middle in the first half for Alisson to comfortably collect. (6/10)

Substitutes

Kingsley Coman: Probably would have started had he been fully fit. The youngster tried his best to get involved but had little impact from the bench. (5/10)

Renato Sanches: Popped up in some promising positions, putting his fresh legs to good use, but he constantly made the wrong decision on the ball. (5/10)

Leon Goretzka: Won 100% of his duels, which is something, but in terms of an attacking edge he failed to provide it during his short time on the field. (6/10)
