Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admits that he did not expect to record a 3-0 victory against Manchester City in Wednesday night's Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confessed that he and his contingent did not expect to record such a comprehensive victory against Manchester City in their Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The Reds ran out 3-0 winners in Wednesday's clash at Anfield as Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane all struck in the opening third of the match.

Klopp was nonetheless critical of Liverpool's display in the second half, suggesting that they had taken their foot off the gas, and also spoke about Jordan Henderson, who will be suspended for the return leg due to a booking, and the potentially injured Salah.

"The result is not what we expected but we needed to play more football in the second half," the German told BT Sport. "They did not have a lot of chances but we didn't play much football ourselves. It is only half-time. 3-0 up, good.

"First half was brilliant. It was how football should look. We knew about the quality of City but also about our quality as well. If we could control the game better against a team like Man City and not give the ball away we would be closer to them in the league.

"We defended the passes really good. But I wanted us to play more football. But I am not angry, it is all good. We lose one player to injury (Salah) and another - the captain (Henderson) - to a yellow card so it does not feel good. Mo said he feels good but we will have to see about that."

The second leg of the tie takes place at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, April 10.
