Steven Gerrard believes that Liverpool are "on the verge of something really, really good" following the Reds' Champions League semi-final victory over Roma.

Steven Gerrard has claimed that Liverpool are "on the verge of something really, really good" following the Reds' Champions League semi-final victory over Roma.

On Wednesday night, Liverpool fell to a 4-2 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico but the result was still enough to secure a 7-6 aggregate success over the Italian outfit.

In addition, the Reds have become the third team to score 40 goals within a single season in the Champions League, and have also scored a record-equalling 20 away goals in the competition.

"I'm happy for them," Kop legend and 2004-05 Champions League winner Gerrard told BT Sport. "You see the emotion on James Milner's face there, he's been immense. You see the celebrations in the crowd and I know what it means. I know the following this club has got.

"These fans just want this club to compete and they want to be proud of their team. This manager has got them flying, if they go one step further this could be the start of something special under this manager. I think they're on the verge of something really, really good."

The Champions League final takes place in Kiev on May 26, with Real Madrid standing in Liverpool's way.
