Liverpool picked up a famous 3-1 win over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening to progress through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

The Reds scored the opening goal of the tie 26 minutes into the second leg as Sadio Mane controlled Virgil van Dijk's pass, took Manuel Neuer out of the game with a turn just inside the box and clipped the ball into the far corner of the net.

A Joel Matip own goal gave Bayern some hope, but Van Dijk put the visitors back in control of the match and Mane rounded off the scoring late on.

Relive how a famous night for Liverpool unfolded with Sports Mole's live text coverage below.

7.55pmHello and welcome to Sports Mole's live text coverage of the Champions League last-16 second leg between Bayern Munich and Liverpool at the Allianz Arena. This showdown between two five-time European champions remains well poised following a goalless draw in the reverse fixture at Anfield three weeks ago.

Bayern have won only one of their eight matches in European competition against the Reds. However, 68% of the 31 previous teams to have drawn 0-0 away from home in the first leg of a Champions League knockout tie have ended up progressing to the next round, so the German champions will consider themselves slight favourites tonight.

STARTING XI: Neuer; Rafinha, Sule, Hummels, Alaba; Thiago, Martinez; Gnabry, Rodriguez, Ribery; Lewandowski

SUBS: Ulreich, Boateng, Goretzka, Davies, Jeong, Coman, Sanches

STARTING XI: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Milner, Wijnaldum, Henderson; Salah, Firmino, Mane

SUBS: Mignolet, Lovren, Fabinho, Lallana, Shaqiri, Origi, Sturridge

1 minKICKOFF:  Liverpool, who wasted the better chances in the scoreless first leg, get us up and running at the Allianz Arena! The visitors bring in Milner and Henderson for Lallana and Fabinho; Kimmich and Muller drop out for Bayern, replaced by Alaba and Ribery.

3 minBayern have seen a lot more of the ball in the early stages. Ribery gets into a good position down the left but Alexander-Arnold stays tight to him. The ball goes deep before being launched forward into the box, where Alisson is waiting to collect.

5 minAs expected, Bayern's full-backs are playing in a more advanced position today compared to the first leg a few weeks ago. Liverpool left-back Robertson is not afraid to power forward, either, but he is stopped in his tracks by Rafinha, who is filling in for the suspended Kimmich.

7 minHenderson has gone to the floor clutching his ankle, soon after colliding with James. Liverpool's physios are now on the field giving him some treatment. This could be an early injury blow for Klopp, who has Fabinho and Lallana on the bench. There is no Keita in the squad today.

8 minThe second leg has started in a similar manner to the first - so very little between the sides. Henderson is about to return to the pitch after getting his ankle strapped.

10 minSHOT!  Firmino carelessly squares the ball to Thiago, who has every right to take on the shot from 25 yards. The side-footed effort is well off target.

12 minPENALTY APPEAL!  Liverpool, who now have a full complement of players following Henderson's return to the field, look to have got away with one as Lewandowski and Van Dijk appeared to tangle legs. However, replays show that the Bayern striker lost control of the ball after getting the wrong side of Van Dijk and there was no real contact made.

13 minBayern's players and supporters are furious as Henderson goes to the ground again. The referee waves the physios on the field but it looks as though the Reds' skipper will have to make way early on.

14 minLIVERPOOL SUB! Henderson does indeed have to make way after failing to shake off the ankle injury sustained in a challenge with James. Fabinho, tipped to start today by many, is brought on in his place.

16 minSixteen minutes played and there has been just one opening of note. Lewandowski got on the end of Thiago's lofted pass but could not get a shot away with effectively just Alisson to beat. Confirmation has come through that Henderson left the field with an ankle injury, as we thought.

18 minBayern have dominated possession in the opening quarter of the game, seeing 73 per cent of the ball. It has been cagey to say the least, with neither teams wanting to make a mistake. The early signs suggest that we will go the distance.

20 minLiverpool have succeeded in silencing the crown by keeping Bayern out in the opening 20 minutes. Both sides have essentially gone with three players in central midfield today and they are all cancelling each other out.

22 minSTATS! Bayern Munich have only failed to score once in their last 26 Champions League home games - that was against Sevilla in last season's quarter-finals (0-0). Liverpool have lost their last four away games in the Champions League (three goals for, nine against) - they have never lost five in a row in European competition.

24 minMane is caught in two minds as he sends the ball into the middle, which Neuer easily deals with. There has been just one shot so far this evening - Thiago sending a shot well wide of goal following an error from Firmino.

26 minCLOSE!  Firmino takes on the shot early and nearly catches out Neuer. The first-time shot from outside the boxes fizzes wide of the Bayern target, with Neuer diving across to his left. That is Liverpool's best opportunity yet - their only opportunity!

28 minLiverpool have the away goal they craved! Mane gets it thanks to a smart little Cruyff turn just inside the Bayern box to take Neuer out of play - no idea what the Bayern keeper was thinking coming so far off his line. Mane still has work to do, clipping the ball over a couple of players into the far corner of the net.

29 minA word on Van Dijk's part in that Mane goal. The Dutch centre-back picked out his teammate with a delightful pass, which Mane took down to leave Neuer stranded. It was part goalkeeping error, part brilliance on Mane's behalf.

31 minWell one thing is for certain now - we will not have extra time this evening. Bayern nearly find an instant response as Lewandowski profits from some sloppy Liverpool play by sending a 25-yard shot down the middle, where Alisson is waiting to make a straightforward save.

32 minRibery, who we have not seen a lot of in the opening half an hour or so, gets the better of Alexander-Arnold down his side of the pitch and sends a cross into the box, which Robertson does well to deal with. Bayern need to step things up.

33 minMane's well-taken goal 26 minutes in separates the two sides. Bayern have yet to really create anything of note - that has to change if they are to score the two goals they need to remain alive in Europe.

34 minBayern have offered so very little in this first half. The same has been true of Liverpool for large parts, though they made the most of their one and only opportunity when it fell their way. It is the Reds who are heading through to the last eight as things stand.

36 minSAVE!  Robertson peels away from his man down the left and fires in a shot that Neuer keeps out at his near post. The left-back had Firmino better positioned in the box and perhaps could have picked him out.

38 minLiverpool win a couple of corners, both of which are cleared. The hosts try to counter but Gnabry's drilled cross is cleared by Robertson, filling in for Van Dijk in the middle. James is then well off target with his effort.

40 minFrom pretty much out of nothing, Bayern are back on level terms. Gnabry drifts into the box down Robertson's flank and tries to square it to Lewandowski. Matip sticks out a leg and sends the ball flying past Alisson from close range. Cruel!

42 minYELLOW CARD!  Fabinho has a little nibble at James, who was charging towards the penalty box when brought down. Bayern, having looked pretty much for 38 minutes or so, are now the team on top as we approach half time.

44 minDespite being some 30 yards out, Alaba takes on the free kick and finds the target. It was a pretty simple one for Alisson to deal with, though, taking a few steps to his left to keep it out. Liverpool could do with the half-time whistle.

45+1 minLiverpool are giving the ball away far too easily. Bayern nearly make their opponents pay as Lewandowski is played in behind and rounds Alisson. The Polish striker gets too much on the ball and cannot convert it into an empty net, though, and the offside flag would have denied him even if he had done so.

8.49pmThe sides go into half time all square on the night, but Liverpool will go through on away goals as things stand. Mane opened the scoring 26 minutes in through the Reds' only real chance of the half, before Bayern equalised out of the blue through a Matip own goal late in the half. It is all to play for in the remaining 45 minutes here!

8.52pmLiverpool were dealt an early injury blow when losing skipper Jordan Henderson to an ankle injury sustained in a challenge with James Rodriguez, leading to the 13th-minute introduction of Fabinho. Much like in the first leg, the two sides cancelled each other out all over the park in a flat opening quarter to the match.

8.55pmThiago Alcantara fired wide from 25 yards and Robert Lewandowski had a weak penalty appeal rejected when going down in the box under little - if any - contact from Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender played a big part in Liverpool's away goal when it arrived, sending the ball up the field to Sadio Mane, who controlled it and produced a Cruyff turn just inside the box to catch out Manuel Neuer and leave the goalkeeper stranded well off his line.

8.59pmIn-form forward Mane still had plenty of work to do, clipping the ball over a couple of Bayern players and into the far corner of the net for his ninth goal in 10 outings. Andrew Robertson then tested Neuer at his near post as Liverpool went in search of a second, but the next goal would fall the way of the German champions. After bursting clear of Robertson down the visitors' left, Serge Gnabry squared the ball and Joel Matip, attempting to cut out the pass before Lewandowski could tap it in, succeeded only in firing it past his own goalkeeper.

BAYERN MUNICH SUBS: Ulreich, Boateng, Goretzka, Davies, Jeong, Coman, Sanches

LIVERPOOL SUBS: Mignolet, Lovren, Lallana, Shaqiri, Origi, Sturridge

46 minKICKOFF:  Bayern, needing a goal to avoid crashing out at the last-16 stage, get us back underway at the Allianz Arena. No changes made by either manager at half time.

48 minThiago has gone down with a facial injury, but he does not require any treatment. Coman was stripped down to his shorts a couple of minutes ago - it looks as though Bayern boss Kovac is weighing up an early change in this second period.

50 minSAVE!  James delivers a corner into the box and Van Dijk stands his ground, nodding the ball well clear. Liverpool counter and they get a shot away at the end of it, with Salah's well-struck shot being parried by Neuer. The Egyptian had options either side.

52 minBoth teams are still guilty of giving away the ball too easily. There is plenty on the line as we fast approach the hour mark in Bavaria, which tends to be when managers start to look at their back-up options. Liverpool, remember, have already been forced into one alteration.

53 minRibery charges to the byline by his cutback is aimed straight to a Liverpool player. Lewandowski is fouled by Matip and he is unhappy with the contact made on him, having seemingly been caught on the shin.

55 minIt is so far, so good as far as Klopp is concerned in this second half. Liverpool looked very shaky towards the end of the first half after conceding an own goal, but they have given little away in the opening 10 minutes of the second period.

57 minRafinha gets on the end of Alexander-Arnold's right-sided cross, with Firmino waiting to pounce had he missed it. That followed some good link-up play between Alexander-Arnold and Salah out wide.

59 minIt may be time for Kovac to turn to his bench because Bayern are looking very stale at the moment. In fact, Liverpool have had the better of the second half so far. It's incredible the amount of sloppy mistakes both sides are making.

60 minNot a bad view of the action! It has not been the liveliest of matches, it must be said, but it remains incredibly tight with just half an hour to play.

61 minErrors galore out on the field at the moment. Kovac appears ready to make a change - Coman has now taken off all his training gear and is about to come on. There is a little scare for Liverpool as Gnabry's cross is just out of the reach of Lewandowski and James.

62 minBAYERN MUNICH SUB! Coman is brought on for Ribery, who did well to last an hour. The Frenchman chipped in with three assists against Wolfsburg after coming off the bench last weekend, but he has had far less impact today.

63 minYELLOW CARD!  This is a clumsy one from Matip, as he goes right through the back of Lewandowski. The Polish striker has spent most of this second half on the ground. The stop-star nature of the game is working in Liverpool's favour.

64 minThe free kick from James is curled right onto the penalty spot, but Martinez is flagged for offside when getting his head to it. The effort was poor anyway, as the midfielder go under the ball.

66 minMane's away goal will be enough to send Liverpool through as things stand. Liverpool have not looked like scoring either side of the Senegalese forward's strike, and the same is true of Bayern either side of Matip's own goal. It has been a game of few chances.

67 minYELLOW CARD!  Thiago is shown a yellow card for a scissor challenge on Wijnaldum. The Bayern midfielder did get a bit of the ball but those challenges tend to end with a yellow card being shown.

70 minLiverpool restore their lead on the night thanks to a Van Dijk header - his first in the Champions League in his 19th appearance. There is no stopping this; the Dutchman attacks Milner's corner and powers the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the six-yard box.

72 minThat Van Dijk goal will surely take Liverpool through to the last eight of the competition. The Reds now need to manage the game a little better than they did at 1-0 up. Bayern have 18 minutes to find a couple of goals.

74 minBAYERN SUB! Defensive midfielder Martinez is replaced by attack-minded midfielder Goretzka. Liverpool are enjoying a spell on top now, with a couple of crosses into the box causing Bayern's defenders some problems.

75 minSTAT! Van Dijk has scored three goals in his last four games for Liverpool in all competitions - more than he managed in his opening 55 appearances for the Reds (two). Salah wastes a good chance as he is dispossessed by Martinez when he had Mane to his left.

77 minBarring a big collapse in the remaining 13 minutes here, with Bayern requiring a couple of goals, Liverpool will join Tottenham, Man United and Man City in the draw for the quarter-finals. It is turning into quite the season for English clubs on the continent.

79 minBAYERN MUNICH SUB! James is replaced by Sanches with a little over 10 minutes to go. The atmosphere has gone incredibly flat around the Allianz Arena, bar one section, as the home fans know that their side are heading out.

81 minSAVE!  Firmino cuts inside and fires a shot down the middle from 25 yards. It was a pretty weak attempt in the end, but at least Neuer had something do to. Alisson has had a very quiet evening at the other end of the field.

83 minLIVERPOOL SUB! Bayern are probing away but they are getting nowhere fast. Sanches, who has provided Bayern with some fresh legs, pokes the ball well wide of Alisson's goal. Klopp turns to his bench by bringing on Origi for Firmino through the middle.

85 minMane becomes Liverpool's outright highest away goalscorer in European Cup history with his second of the game, which kills off the tie for good. Origi picks out Salah, who in turn sends the ball into the box for Mane to guide into the bottom corner near the back post.

87 minLIVERPOOL SUB! Sanches with yet another poor decision as a Bayern attack fizzles out - the hosts have been pretty terrible across the two legs. Klopp makes his third and final change, bringing on Lallana for Milner. Van Dijk takes over the captaincy duties.

89 minLiverpool fans are making all the noise inside the Allianz Arena as we approach added time. Word is that three minutes are going to be added on. Bayern may score one but they have no chance of netting three.

90+1 minYELLOW CARD!  Wijnaldum lines up the shot form range, which sails high over the crossbar. Prior to that, some good defending from Alexander-Arnold thwarted Sanches when the Portuguese winger was in a promising position. That should be that. Some bad news for Liverpool, though, as Robertson is shown a yellow that will rule him out of the quarter-final first leg.

10.00pmLiverpool beat Bayern Munich 3-1 at the Allianz Arena to progress through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
