Celtic are reportedly hoping to ward off Leicester City's interest in Callum McGregor by offering the playmaker an improved deal.

Celtic are hoping to ward off Leicester City's interest in Callum McGregor by offering the playmaker an improved deal.

The 26-year-old signed a new contract with the Bhoys last December taking him through until 2023, but manager Neil Lennon wants to offer him improved terms.

The Foxes, managed by former Celtic coach Brendan Rodgers, are believed to have shown an interest in bringing the Scotland international to the King Power Stadium during the summer and they are expected to return in January with another approach.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's game with Livingston, Lennon said: "We held on to him and it's important we do the right thing. The principled thing is to give him a new deal, he deserves it.

"In the talks we've had so far, Callum is receptive to staying. I don't know how long he has left but we're hoping to give him an improved contract anyway."

McGregor has scored three goals in 20 appearances this season for club and country and is expected to reach 250 games for Celtic by the end of the month.
