Result: Alex Henshall, Luke Hyam goals down Gillingham

Two goals from Alex Henshall and Luke Hyam prove enough as Ipswich Town beat Gillingham 2-0 in a pre-season friendly.

Ipswich Town have maintained their unbeaten pre-season campaign by securing a comfortable 2-0 win over Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium this afternoon.

Mick McCarthy's side, who thumped Colchester United 3-0 on Wednesday, picked up where they left off in midweek by opening the scoring inside 60 seconds.

Alex Henshall wriggled free of his marker to convert Cameron Stewart's teasing cross at the back post to give Ipswich an ideal start.

The 20-year-old nearly turned provider five minutes later but, after rising highest to meet the youngster's corner, Tommy Smith planted his header narrowly over the bar.

The hosts threatened an equaliser midway through the half, as captain Doug Loft sought to restore parity but his curling effort never troubled goalkeeper Dean Gerken.

The Tractor Boys doubled their advantage shortly after the hour mark through Luke Hyam, who headed home Balint Bajner's near-post cross to cap another impressive run-out for the Championship outfit.
