Iceland captain Aron Gunnarsson claims that there is plenty more to come from his nation, despite their elimination from Euro 2016 at the hands of hosts France.

Iceland captain Aron Gunnarsson has expressed his disappointment at his side going out of Euro 2016, but is adamant that there is plenty more to come from them.

The Nordic nation exceeded expectations by qualifying from Group F in second place before humbling England in the last 16 to book a date with hosts France.

Although Les Bleus ran out 5-2 winners at the Stade de France on Sunday, Gunnarsson believes that his side are "just starting".

He told BBC Sport after the game in Paris: "We are disappointed but incredibly proud. It's been an amazing experience.

"A lot of hard work has gone into this and the fans have been fantastic. They are still singing, it's unbelievable. The French have all left. They are still here. It just shows what we put into this.

"The first half was terrible, we managed to play better after the break. We decided we could not leave like that. We will learn from this. We are just starting."

Iceland, who were 131st in the world rankings just four years ago, are now expected to break into the top 30 following their exploits at the Euros.

France's forward Dimitri Payet (R) is congratulated by France's coach Didier Deschamps after scoring the 2-1 goal during the Euro 2016 group A football match between France and Romania at Stade de France, in Saint-Denis, north of Paris, on June 10, 2016
