Result: Everton see off West Bromwich Albion to earn first win under Ronald Koeman

Everton beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at The Hawthorns to secure their first win under Ronald Koeman.

Gareth Barry has headed a second-half winner to help Everton defeat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 and pick up their first competitive win under manager Ronald Koeman.

The former Manchester City man marked his 100th Premier League appearance for the club with a rare goal, but his side had to come from behind to claim maximum points in the Midlands.

The Blues had lost just once in their last five visits to The Hawthorns, but they almost fell behind in the eighth minute when Salomon Rondon got goalside of their defence and tested Maarten Stekelenburg with a vicious strike that the Dutch stopper could only turn behind.

West Brom took the lead from the resulting corner, Gareth McAuley leaping highest inside a packed penalty box to nod Craig Gardner's cross into the back of the net.

Everton lacked ideas and creativity in the final third for much of the first half, but that quickly changed following the introduction of substitute Romelu Lukaku.

With added bite up front, the Blues surged forward in first-half stoppage time and found an equaliser through Kevin Mirallas, who shot low into the bottom corner after exchanging passes with Ross Barkley.

Both sides played with more intensity in the second period and there was end-to-end action before Koeman's side took the lead just after the hour mark through Barry.

Mirallas swung a corner into the box and youngster Mason Holgate flicked it towards the back post, where Barry was lurking, and the veteran midfielder nodded the ball beyond Ben Foster to make it 2-1.

After spending much of the first period out of the game, Everton looked in control after taking the lead and the introduction of debutant Yannick Bolasie late on almost helped them extend it.

A cross from the Congolese was headed just over by Barkley within moments of his introduction, and only a reaction save from Foster kept out Lukaku after Bolasie had put clean through on goal in the final minute.

Throwing on Ashley Williams as their final substitute helped Everton close up shop in the latter stages and hold on to claim their first win of the season, their first on the road in seven attempts.
