Preview: England vs. Turkey

Sports Mole previews England's first Euro 2016 warm-up match as they host Turkey at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester.

England will get their preparations for Euro 2016 underway on Sunday when they welcome Turkey to the Etihad Stadium for their first warm-up game.

Both sides have three friendlies scheduled before the start of their respective campaigns in France and will be looking to finalise their squad selections over the coming weeks.

For the first time since the new Wembley opened in 2007, England will play a home match away from the national stadium when they travel to Manchester for this clash.

The visit of Turkey precedes games against Australia at the Stadium of Light and Portugal back at Wembley, but manager Roy Hodgson has just two outings to finalise his 23-man squad for this summer's tournament.

There were a number of eyebrows raised when the preliminary 26-man squad was named, with surprise inclusions for Marcus Rashford and Andros Townsend and no place for the likes of Theo Walcott and Jermain Defoe.

Perhaps the biggest question marks for Hodgson remain over Jordan Henderson and Jack Wilshere, though, with the midfield duo only making their respective returns from injury in the final week of the campaign.

The time for tournament preparation is fast running out ahead of England's opener against Russia on June 11, but the bookies suggest that the Three Lions have already done enough to warrant a place among the favourites to end their 50-year wait for international honours.

Victories over the two main favourites to lift the trophy - hosts France and world champions Germany - in recent friendlies have done nothing to harm those odds, nor did a perfect qualification campaign with 10 wins from 10.

It is the first time that England have ever won all of their matches when qualifying for a major tournament, and they also ended the campaign with the second-best records in both attack and defence over the entire group stages.

It hasn't all been plain sailing since the end of the qualification campaign, though, with defeats to Spain and Netherlands, the latter of whom failed to reach France, in two of their last four friendlies.

The loss against the Dutch also ended a nine-match winning streak at home that stretched back to November 2013, although Hodgson did experiment somewhat with his starting XI for that match, including a debut for Leicester City's Danny Drinkwater.

More chopping and changing is expected in the coming weeks as Hodgson looks to give every player a chance to prove themselves ahead of his final squad selection for the upcoming tournament, where England will take on Russia, Wales and Slovakia.

Turkey

Turkey may not be quite the same calibre of opponent as the likes of Spain, France and Germany, all of whom England have faced recently, but Fatih Terim's side should pose some serious questions for Hodgson's side.

Placed just three spots below England in FIFA's world rankings, Turkey go into Sunday's match as one of the form national teams in Europe.

They have won 10 and lost none of their last 13 outings in all competitions, a run that stretches back to November 2014 and includes a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Netherlands, who beat England in their last match.

Turkey will look to continue that form during their upcoming trio of warm-up matches, with Terim's side taking on Montenegro and Slovenia before their opening Euro 2016 match against Croatia on June 12.

Should they maintain their recent run then hopes would be high of springing a surprise in France and perhaps even coming close to matching their Euro 2008 showing, when they finished third.

That was their last appearance in a major international tournament, though, with Turkey having failed to qualify for the last two World Cups or the European Championships four years ago.

They have not been drawn in a particularly kind group this time around either, with defending champions Spain and Czech Republic joining them and Croatia in Group D.

Czech Republic were also in Turkey's qualification pool and finished top of the pile in Group A, with Terim's side only reaching France by the skin of their teeth following a poor start to their campaign.

After losing their opening two fixtures, Turkey won five and drew three of the next eight, but still needed a last-minute winner in their final qualifying fixture against Iceland to book their place in the tournament automatically as the best third-placed team.

Since then, Turkey have beaten Qatar, Sweden and Austria, in addition to drawing with Greece, but there is still plenty of work for Terim to do before June having named a preliminary 31-man squad for the tournament - eight more than they can take to France.

Turkey will arrive at the Etihad Stadium on the back of five consecutive away victories and no losses on the road since September 2014, but their last visit to England did end in defeat.

Team News

Hodgson will be without a number of possible starters for this match, with captain Wayne Rooney among a Manchester United contingent who are unavailable due to their FA Cup final exploits on Saturday.

Chris Smalling and Rashford also fall into that category, and there is now a question mark over the latter's fitness after he limped off at Wembley.

Liverpool's players have joined up with the squad but are unlikely to be involved following their defeat to Sevilla in Wednesday's Europa League final, ruling Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana, James Milner and Daniel Sturridge out.

Henderson will be available having only been an unused sub in Basel, and Hodgson is likely to give the Liverpool skipper and Arsenal's Wilshere some much-needed game time.

Golden Boot winner Harry Kane is expected to lead the line, but could play up front alongside Jamie Vardy, who finished one goal behind the Tottenham Hotspur striker in the Premier League top-scorer race this season.

Meanwhile, Gary Cahill will captain his country for just the second time in the absence of Rooney and is likely to be joined by John Stones at the heart of the defence.

Turkey are also missing their captain due to club commitments, with Barcelona's Arda Turan hoping to be involved in the Copa del Rey final.

Nuri Sahin and Burak Yilmaz are still with their respective clubs too, while Terim could opt to hand a senior international debut to 18-year-old winger Emre Mor.

England possible starting lineup:
Hart; Walker, Stones, Cahill, Bertrand; Henderson, Dier, Townsend, Barkley, Sterling; Kane

Turkey possible starting lineup:
Babacan; Gonul, Topal, Balta Erkin; Tufan, Inan, Mor, Calhanoglu, Tosun; Ozyakup

Head To Head

This will be the first ever friendly meeting between these two sides, but they have faced off on 10 previous occasions in qualifiers, during which time England are unbeaten with eight wins and two draws.

Indeed, Turkey have never even scored a goal past England in those 10 meetings - a Three Lions record against a single national team - while England have scored 31 goals in that time at an average of more than three per game.

The most recent meeting was a goalless draw during qualifying for 2004, but England won the last game on home soil as goals from Darius Vassell and David Beckham gave them a 2-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

We say: England 2-0 Turkey

Turkey come into this match in fine form, but England usually manage to win on home soil. The visitors are missing arguably their three most dangerous players, which could see their wait for a goal against England stretch to 11 games.
