Wayne Rooney wants the Football Association to extend Roy Hodgson's reign as England boss after Euro 2016, citing his selection of young players and fostering a good atmosphere.

England captain Wayne Rooney has admitted that he and the rest of the squad want Roy Hodgson to stay on as Three Lions manager past Euro 2016.

The 68-year-old's contract at the helm of the home nation expires following the conclusion of the tournament in France.

With Football Association chairman Greg Dyke suggesting that a new contract for Hodgson is dependent on England's performance at Euro 2016, Rooney has given his opinion on the matter.

The Manchester United forward told reporters at a press conference: "It is down to his bosses but of course, as players, we want him to stay.

"It shouldn't go unnoticed the amount of young players he's introduced into the squad over the last four years.

"In my opinion he has not only created a very good team but also a fantastic atmosphere around the training ground when we meet up, and a great base for England's future in the next six to eight years."

England will find out whether they qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2016 on Monday, when they take on Slovakia in their final Group B game.
