Result: England out of European Under-17 Championship after Netherlands penalty defeat

England Under-17s fall at the semi-final stage of the European Under-17 Championship due to a penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Netherlands Under-17s.

England Under-17s have been knocked out of the UEFA European Under-17 Championship at the semi-final stage due to a penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Netherlands Under-17s.

The Dutch began brightly at Chesterfield's Proact Stadium as goalkeeper Luca Ashby-Hammond kept out efforts from Liam van Gelderen and Mohammed Ihattaren early on.

However, the Young Lions grew into the game, with Rayhaan Tulloch firing narrowly over the bar, Faustino Anjorin rattling the post and Bobby Duncan dragging a free kick just wide.

The second half saw another positive start from Holland as Ihattaten rifled a low effort which Ashby-Hammond expertly saved down low at his near post.

Neither side could break the deadlock come the end of normal time, while the visitors came close to scoring a winner late in extra time, only for Ihattaren to fluff his lines after connecting with Ryan Gravenberch's cross.

A tense penalty shootout followed, with every initial spot kick finding the back of the net as the contest edged into sudden death.

Unfortunately for England, the first one to miss was Folarin Balogun, the Arsenal youngster seeing his effort kept out by Joey Koorevaar to send the Dutch into the final at the Young Lions' expense.

The Netherlands face Italy in Sunday's final at Rotherham's New York Stadium.
