A report claims that Roy Hodgson is to be backed by Crystal Palace chiefs in the January transfer window, but he must first offload a number of fringe players.

Roy Hodgson has reportedly been informed that he will have £40m available to him to strengthen Crystal Palace's squad in the January transfer window.

The 70-year-old became the oldest manager appointed by a Premier League club this week when taking over from Frank de Boer at Selhurst Park.

Palace have started the season in a disastrous manner, losing all four league games without scoring a goal - the first top-flight side to do so in 93 years.

According to the Daily Star, Hodgson demanded assurances that he will be financially backed in the winter window, while also making clear that he will have complete control over team selection.

It is claimed that Hodgson may have to offload fringe players before being given the green light to bring in new recruits, however, as Palace are wary of overspending on wages.
