Roy Hodgson believes that Crystal Palace suffered from "unlucky" refereeing decisions at the hands of Michael Oliver as they fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

Roy Hodgson has bemoaned "unlucky" refereeing decisions as Crystal Palace fell to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Liverpool on Monday night.

The Eagles conceded on the stroke of half time when Mamadou Sakho brought Mohamed Salah down in the box to give away a penalty, which James Milner tucked home.

Palace then had young defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka sent off on 75 minutes after hacking down Salah en route to goal.

Liverpool went on to score again in injury time as Sadio Mane ran from his own half before rounding Wayne Hennessey to condemn the Selhurst Park side to defeat.

"I thought we pushed them very hard," the former Reds boss told Sky Sports News at full time. "We should have come in at 0-0 at half time and then the second half would have been even tougher. We gave them enough problems and we can consider ourselves unlucky to lose 2-0.

"What would people expect me to say to that [penalty] decision? There is no point discussing it. Sakho is a defender and he has to try and defend, which I think he did well.

"At the end of the game Van Dijk clears out Max Meyer and we didn't get a penalty. We were unlucky with referee decisions. I'm more interested in the fact we played really well."

Prior to Monday night's loss, Palace were unbeaten in seven Premier League games going back to a 2-1 defeat by Liverpool on March 31.
