Cheltenham Town part company with manager Gary Johnson just four games into the season, following his side's 1-1 draw with Macclesfield Town.

Cheltenham Town have parted company with manager Gary Johnson after just four games of the new League Two season.

The Robins have picked up just one point in the league so far this term, losing to Crawley Town, Tranmere Rovers and Carlisle United before this evening's 1-1 draw with Macclesfield Town.

However, a first point of the campaign was not enough to save Johnson, who was sacked less than an hour after the final whistle of the game at Moss Rose Ground with his side sitting 22nd in the League Two table.

Cheltenham overcame Colchester United on penalties in the EFL Cup first round last week, but have won just one of their last 12 competitive outings inside normal time, losing nine of those.

"It is with great regret that the Board of Cheltenham Town FC have this evening parted company with manager Gary Johnson," read a statement on the club's official website.

"We would like to place on record our sincere thanks for the tireless work that Gary has done on behalf of the club, work that has left the club in a stronger position than when he took over.

"Assistant manager Russell Milton has been placed in temporary charge of team affairs for the foreseeable future."

Johnson joined Cheltenham in March 2015, suffering relegation in his first season at the helm but then steering the club to an immediate return to the Football League.

The 62-year-old former Bristol City boss ends his time at Whaddon Road having won 65 of his 172 matches at the helm, with 43 draws and 64 defeats.
