England defender Gary Cahill emerges as a doubt for the World Cup qualifier against Malta after missing training due to a sore throat.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has emerged as a doubt for England's World Cup qualifier against Malta on Saturday.

Cahill missed training on Friday due to a sore throat, leaving interim manager Gareth Southgate potentially light at the back after Everton's Phil Jagielka was forced to withdraw from the squad.

The duo are the latest in a growing line of injuries to affect Southgate's preparations, and he hinted that reinforcements could be called before Monday's flight to Slovenia.

"We're monitoring Gary Cahill. We'll have a look after the game tomorrow then assess the squad in full. I have to say it's been a remarkable week injury-wise. Losing Adam Lallana so early in the week, on the back of Harry Kane... then Raheem Sterling, Danny Drinkwater, Nathaniel Clyne," he told reporters.

"Fortunately I'm used to that from dealing with the under-21s. You're waiting for a game for a month then a lot of your plans are affected, so I haven't been as affected by it maybe as someone coming in from the outside.

"You get quite phlegmatic about it, find a different solution. We'll monitor Gary and see how he is in the morning."

Southgate also confirmed that both Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott would start the match at Wembley.
